About this workbook

89-page fillable PDF workbook, instant download

Grief affects far more than your mood. It can change your sleep, your memory and concentration, your relationships, and the way an ordinary day feels. This workbook gives you a place to understand what you are going through and to work with the hardest parts of it, at whatever pace feels right. There is no right timeline for using it.

It has 11 chapters and 34 worksheets. Each chapter explains one part of grief in everyday language, then gives you worksheets to apply it to your own life. The exercises draw on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), compassion-focused approaches and what we know about grief and loss.

What this grief and loss workbook covers

The first chapters help you understand grief. You write down the story of your loss, learn what grief is and what it is not, and look at how waves of grief show up in your body, including what to do when one comes at work or in public.

The middle chapters make room for the pain. You map the other losses that come with the main one, practise ways to sit with strong feelings and be kind to yourself, and step back from the replaying and the "what ifs".

The later chapters look at staying connected to the person through rituals and letters, working through guilt, anger and what was left unsaid, and living alongside what cannot change. The final chapters help you rebuild around the loss and plan ahead for anniversaries, birthdays and holidays.

Who this workbook is for

Designed by a registered psychologist. This workbook is for adults grieving the death of a partner, parent, child, friend or other loved one. It is also for adults grieving a loss that is not a death, such as a parent living with dementia, an estrangement, or a family member lost to addiction. No background in psychology is needed.

Psychologists, counsellors, grief workers and other practitioners can also give it to clients as a structured program between sessions, with the clinician licence.

How to use this workbook

Start with the Where to Start page to choose your first chapter. You do not need to work through the chapters in order, and it is fine to put the workbook down and come back to it later. Type your answers into the pages on a computer or tablet, or print the workbook and write by hand. If you see a psychologist, counsellor, doctor or grief service, you can bring completed pages to your sessions.

Choose the personal licence for your own use. The clinician licence lets one practitioner print and give copies to their own clients, individually or in groups they run.

What you receive
