About this workbook

82-page fillable PDF workbook, instant download

Burnout usually builds slowly. You keep going because people are relying on you, rest stops making a difference, and one day you notice you have nothing left for the things you used to enjoy. This workbook helps you understand what has happened, work out what is using up your energy, and recover at a pace you can actually manage.

It has 10 chapters and 38 worksheets. Each chapter explains one part of burnout in plain language, then gives you worksheets to apply it to your own life. The exercises draw on pacing, relapse prevention, boundary and communication skills, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

What this burnout recovery workbook covers

The first chapters help you take stock. You list everything you are currently carrying, learn how burnout differs from everyday stress and from depression, and map your own warning signs and the way burnout tends to build for you.

The middle chapters focus on rest and recovery. You practise ways to settle your body after a stressful day, look at the boom and bust cycle, and plan a paced week around the energy you have now rather than the energy you had before.

The later chapters look at the unhelpful rules many people hold about work and rest, such as "I should be able to cope", and help you set boundaries and keep them with the people around you. There are pages for burnout connected to work, for carers, and for situations that cannot change right now. The final chapters cover reconnecting with what recharges you and a plan for staying well.

Who this workbook is for

Designed by a registered psychologist. This workbook is for adults who feel exhausted and stretched past what they can keep up, whether that comes from work, caring for someone, study, family life or a mix of these. No background in psychology is needed.

Psychologists, counsellors and other practitioners who work with stress and burnout can also give it to clients as a structured program between sessions, with the clinician licence.

How to use this workbook

Start with the Where to Start page to choose your first chapter, then work at a pace that suits your energy. Type your answers into the pages on a computer or tablet, or print the workbook and write by hand. If you see a psychologist, counsellor or doctor, you can bring completed pages to your sessions.

Choose the personal licence for your own use. The clinician licence lets one practitioner print and give copies to their own clients, individually or in groups they run.
